Arial vs. Times New Roman
G'morning y'all... I've gotten to the office, shocked to see that Lee has gone ahead and finished my big project of the day yesterday... and it looks like he stayed really late to do it. Good man! I'll have to shake his hand and buy him a beer (when he's drinkin' again) for the job well done. The company came back with pages of changes to make... mostly 'cuz of their formatting in Word, but so many things to pick up that a lot were missed.
I still have about 10 minutes before Meathead is supposed to show up. I don't know what I'm gonna get him to do today... he's probably not even done the easy one that he had started yesterday. Somehow, I think I might be responsible for what he does... almost in a managerial sense. Fred had told me to tell him to hurry up yesterday... odd. I've only been here a month, how am I this responsible already?
It looks like ol' Meathead is walkin' up to the office now. He's awfully early this morning.
I had written a fair sized rant yesterday after I got home about the perils of Meathead, but my internet crashed when I hit the Publish Post button and I had lost the whole thing. How terrible is that? So, now I might have to re-write the whole thing this morning, just to make sure I get my point across. Actually, I'll write it as I go along during the day. I'm sure now that he's here, it'll irk me enough to write more nasty things... just 'cuz I'm an evil guy.
When Meathead showed up on Monday morning, we had a bit of time to kill before the work started to flood in. I was pretty glad that there was help coming, because this week was supposed to be (and has been) a pretty manic one. In the time to kill, I had asked him what his HTML skills were like. He had said that he had done lots of coding before, although it wasn't really in Microsoft FrontPage.
Now, being able to actually write code as code itself should lend to a good understanding of the limitations and capabilities of HTML code. I would think so anyways. It should also translate, some slower than others, into FrontPage fairly well. If you know what you want to do in the code, you should be able to figure it out in the WYSIWYG format of the program.
Well, sadly, this isn't the case. I think Meathead sold management on what he 'says' he can do and that's really about it. I've had to start teaching him Windows commands, design elements and just general theory about these documents that we're working on. Let alone the actual rigors of the job. I'm not equipped to handle such stress.
He couldn't even tell the difference between Arial and Times New Roman fonts. Yesterday, he typed two sentences in both fonts and said, "okay, what's the difference?" My proverbial jaw dropped and it took me a moment to gather my composure, trying not to sound to condescending (failing miserably) saying, "they're both visably different."
"Oh, I see that now he says." And that's just the jist of the story. I couldn't believe it.
This is only a sample of the joys of life now at Filing Services Canada. Granted, the work is still better than working with the Muppets... now Lee and I have something new to rant and rave about in the afternoon.
At least tonight, it's hockey pool night at the Wildfire. I can't wait. I'm pretty much ready to go.
