Canada 5 - Germany 1
Well, I'm not too sure if I'm quite convinced of the power of this Canadian team... the test of playing Finland on Sunday will better suit any judgement. The Canadians eased their way past the Germans early this afternoon (Calgary time) to go 2-0 in the tournament. The first period being far and away their best period in the tournament with responsible checking and good transitional play... but the second was taken down a few notches and the third was just a morning skate for most of them.
Simon Gagne's hard work in front of the net to power in his goal of the game, plus his assist, clearly made him the best Canadian on the ice.
The defense was caught flat-footed at times, being too aggressive with pinching and not really staying in position in the offensive zone to force a lot of sustained pressure on the sapling Germans.
The Germans on the other hand could sense a slower shift in pace in the second when they picked theirs up, which I think caught the Canadians by surprise. Much like the women's squad, I would like to have seen a very dominate men side that makes me believe we're best in the world. We didn't bring our best players to the tournament to play like our weakest opponents.
Next up... the 1-1 Swiss, who upset the Czechs today... hooray!
