My Song of 2005

Well, every year (since 1996), I kind of make a note in my head of my favourite song of the year. It doesn't really mean anything, there isn't any trophies or statuettes to be given out... but I do tend to measure it up against the song of the year in most of the major award ceremonies (ie. the Grammies, AMA's, Juno's or the last couple years with the Mercury Music Prize). I'm glad to say that I'm really part of the huge conglomerate most years and my taste is generally just mine.

For the honour, I've just really got to be passionate about the song. I don't think I will get into the reasons why some songs won... 'cuz well, that's just not gonna happen. HA! But I'll just list what have won before...

Previous Winners Include:
1996: Lightning Crashes by Live
1997: Building A Mystery by Sarah McLachlan
1998: Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls
1999: The Future is X-Rated by the Matthew Good Band
2000: Stand Inside Your Love by the Smashing Pumpkins
2001:
2002:
2003: Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes
2004: Chicken Payback by the Bees

You know what, I've lost the little piece of paper in my head with the list of best tunes of the year. Those I remember, for sure. I will fill in the blanks when I get a chance. A little research never hurt anyone, eh? Only two years to go...

I've gotta say that 2005 has already brought out some killer tunes. With me leaving the UK, a couple of them earned some pretty good nominations at the moment for Song of the Year.

Other Side of the World by KT Tunstall and Half Light by Athlete are the two front runners for the honour. They are just fantastic tunes and I keep listening to them over and over again. Blue Orchid & My Doorbell by the White Stripes would take a good look as they get played quite a bit still and since the Arcade Fire have released Laika & Power Out as singles in 2005, they could also get some serious consideration, because Funeral is one of the better albums I've bought over the last few years. Positive Tension by Bloc Party is a real pick-me-up of a song as well, definitely my favourite from that album.

You see what I mean, there's tons of good tracks this year and we're only half way through.

I think I did an album list, but it was very corresponding to the Song of the Year list, I think I just kind of gave up on it. Well, I'm sure I'll update my list soon and give more nominations as the year progresses. Hell, in my boredom, I might just draw up a fake statuette and be as tacky as the other award ceremonies. Oh yeah... where can I buy a red carpet?

I can very much agree with what you have up on your list so far. I'd have to say my fave songs for those years correlate with yours, minus the last 2 years :).
